GRASS CLIPPINGS
Grass clippings contain about 4 percent nitrogen, 0.5 percent phosphorus and 2 percent potassium plus small amounts of other plant nutrients. Grass clippings can supply 25 percent of a lawn’s total fertilizer needs.
Burying grass clippings starves it of oxygen which it requires to decompose. Compost it, thus letting air get to it. Let cut grass dry out a couple of days before composting. Compost in thin layers with layers of other stuff. Simply tossing grass clippings into your compost pile can result in a slow and/or smelly compost pile because grass can become compacted and overly wet, which prevents aeration and leads to the inactivity of the microbes that make composting happen.
Leave grass clippings on the lawn. They will decompose (in place) and improve your turf.
WARNING !
Not to compost grass clippings from lawns treated with herbicides such as Verdone Extra, Verdone Extra Ready to use, Verdone Extra Spot Weeder or Weed-B-Gone. These herbicides contain clopyralid which persists in compost made from treated clippings and can stunt plants grown in that compost.
